Unit2 - Introduction to design and research skills in creative media production

Pre-Production

For this project we were originally in a team of 3 but another person joined meaning that we had 4 people now. We were all set different task; one was set to do the script two people for the storyboard including myself and the last person was finding audio clips that would be valid towards animation.

Here is the storyboard that I thought of. Its about a girl who goes to the library and she loves reading. She ends up finding a book that looks interesting but when she sits down there is no text in it at all. After this a shady character who you only see their arm pushes the girl into the book. The girl goes flying through a portal followed by a book. She is terrified at this time and she looks around to try get an idea where she is to find out that she is in a forest. She decides to start exploring and she finds a tree house after half a mile of walking through this massive forest. She knocks on the door and the door opens by itself and the girls sees someone in there and asks questions about the book. They explain how that's bizarre and that they never herd of a book that could this. So she decides to leave and explore further into the forest and she ends up encountering a huge monster. She is frozen on the spot and looks at the floor to see a massive stick and a stone. She picks up the stick and she throws it at the monster killing it and it transforms on the spot into guts with a stick just sliding away from other guts. She begins to work and she buckles on the stone and she throws the book for it to land in the guts. The book just bursts into flames, she cry's because she thinks she is stuck there forever, so she takes the stick and carry's on her journey through the forest. She sees a massive Shadow but its bold and dense she could see it from far. And she goes up to him and they start having a conversation after that is done she hurts thee shadow badly somehow with the stick and then after she notices that he has the book and she takes it as soon as she takes it she realizes that she is back in the library. She looks at the time to see what time it is and realizes that no time has actually gone past but the book has mysteriously filled its self.

Production

The first thing that we did was have a group discussion the storyboard this so that everyone knew what was going to happen in the animation. After everyone understood our group leader Joe gave out positions to everyone and he split the scenes into 3 parts for people to do. Even though we had 4 people because I was doing the backgrounds.

Out of the whole animation there was 3 backgrounds all together because most of the animation is set in the forest but my first attempt of doing the forest was not too good  because and i made it and the angle looked like a birds eye angle so i decided to do it flat from a side view. I panned it out so that it makes it easier for the people who are animation as well as this but it also gives better detail overall. I decided to watch the YouTuber Draw with Jazza and he has a video that helped me with panning. This video helped in 2 ways this was to help me how to pan and what it should look like for a frame to frame background.

Two people were struggling with making the animation because they couldn't animate so I decided to help them make the animations move because they had trouble getting the legs to move because they didn't properly understand the uses of the layers and so i helped with fix. And the other person messed up the legs and so it was all on one layer. Because we were short of time I decided to just tell him to just try and make it move like that.

The library

After all of this I and Taha another member of the group put it together. Because it was his role to get sounds as well as animating he didn't have all the sounds but he had a spooky sound track to it.  So I put all the scenes together and then save it for still in progress it was 33 seconds.

Evaluation

Overall as a team we could have done better but this was because of the start from the pre-production we were forced to work with people we don't usually work with and this gave us the problems such as communication we wasn't able to communicate properly and efficiently. That led to the problems of not knowing if someone is stuck or has a reason why they couldn't do it. As well as this being a major issue we as a group managed to overcome it. Overall because some people needed a lot of help and motivation all the scenes were not finished therefore when we showed the animation a lot people didn't understand because of missing scenes. And the last scene couldn't be seen to well because for the last scene the canvas size is different. I think that although people did work they took roles without expecting anything from it. Even though they didn't know what to do I helped them more so they could understand how to do it. The advantages of this is that they can become better and learn things they didn't know but on the other hand the disadvantages are that this is time consuming meaning that it will take for myself and especially how they told me that they needed help really late. I think that even though I did all the backgrounds I could have done more backgrounds for the forest so it’s not just looped. That would make it look like the forest different every time like I could have made it get more evil. I intended of doing this by making the forest darker and then putting glowing eyes in from the trees so it gives more of a scary look and a horror vibe.

Here are the 3 backgrounds I did.

I decided to make the forest again because it didn't look to much like a forest as well as that but it was too much trees in 1 spot and it was hard to get a right proportion so I decided to do it again this way I could have it more flat and this made it easier for me to do. With the library Joe said that he was going to add more to the scene so there is other things but he said that they’re going to be things that are moving like a clock and things like that. So all he asked from me to do is a book shelf and just try and make it look realistic and not messy. So I colored the book shelf to try and make it a bit colorful and also I made some books lean because books are not always straight.

This was the day that as a group of 3 we were set a case-study's homework or as lesson work to do 1 each.

Case-Studies                        A case study on Limbo

Public Domain. (2010). Limbo (video game). Available: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limbo_(video_game). Last accessed 14/10/16.

Limbo is a video game that conveys ambiguity through hostility and monstrous principles; in other words: everything wants to kill you because it's just the nature of this...limbo you're in (that isn't a pun, stop shaming me). In the game, you awake as a child in a dark black and white forest trying to look for your sister. You don't where exactly you are, or even why you're here. All you know is that this is a side-scroller and the end goal is right. So when you start going right, you start remembering that you are a small, vulnerable child in a dark forest, filled with various traps, falling objects, and rocks that will crush you, decapitate you and drown you on your first play-through. To progress through the game, you will need memorize everything that killed you, study it's patterns and make sure you avoid it. This game will not tell what's going on; it'll only show you the mistakes you're making, the corpses of children that have also entered this place, the dangers you will face, and a spider that is constantly trying to kill you.

You need to remember that this spider that tries to kill you isn't doing it out of hatred, but only abiding to its nature; just as the other children you meet, who have adapted to a Lord-of-the-Flies-esque nature, also constantly trying to kill you every time you encounter them. It's nothing personal. It's just how things work here. Kill or be killed. The game always reminds you that nothing is your friend; not the spider, or the kids, and especially not the glowing brain leeches that make you kill yourself. And it's all presented through its feeling - your feeling; not the feeling scared, but rather unsettled. Every second you play, you can feel the weight of your character as you run, you can feel yourself struggling as you drown, you feel that spider impale over and over again. It gives you the morbid sense that you're just a small child in a place that seems to be centered between life and death, and you're powerless. No level up, no EXP...you just have to go right.

A case study on The Binding of Isaac(: Rebirth + Afterbirth Expansion)

Alex McAuliffe. (Mar 8 2015). The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth: Member Review. Available: https://gbatemp.net/review/the-binding-of-isaac-rebirth.283/. Last accessed 7/10/2016.

On the surface, The Binding of Isaac looks like a weird game with monsters in it, but it's much deeper than that, exploring themes of abuse, religious turmoil, neglect, guilt, all presented through body horror, grotesque imagery and dark humor. Technically it isn't a full on horror game, but there's enough disturbing content that at times can get under your skin (I'm more fascinated by the game then disturbed).

If it has a small crying as the protagonist, then it's some form of horror. Especially if the child is fighting mutilated, decapitated, diseased versions of himself; various giant insects; zygotes and fetuses; flying balls of fistula an teratoma; happy sentient fecal matter: your morbidly obese mother; Satan himself, and even yourself as well as what appears to be your corpse. Where did all of this start? One day, Isaac's mother hears the voice of God commanding her to sacrifice her son. So without hesitating, mother grabs the nearest butcher's knife and heads straight for Isaac's room to appease the lord, just after Isaac's falls through a trapdoor leading to his basement. This game is dark.

Unlike traditional horror games where you can find a weapon for defense, you already have a weapon: you're fluids (tears)! The game doesn't tell you how to use them, it just places you in the level, shows you what abilities you have, and shows you four directions you can move in: up down left and right. Lets see were these directions will lead to. Now you're in a room filled with enemies, most likely flies. Pretty standard at first, now let's go into the second. Now the flies are a little more viscous, starting to attack in swarms. Aggression starts rising. You're next wave of enemies arrive in the next room. This is where the game starts getting weird. The enemies look exactly like you, only now crying blood or just have completely red hollow eye sockets; some even bigger and fatter. This is where you start to think about what you're defending yourself against. Why did those enemies look like me (Isaac)? You notice a locked door leading to a shop. You open it. Why is the shopkeeper a dead, grey corpse with a broken noose around it's head? Why not buy some items (if you have enough money). Why do they have a decapitated cat head that spawns friendly flies as an item?

All those questions you've asked, they will keep coming the deeper you go. You'll find yourself fighting the seven deadly sins, trading your life (heart containers) to the devil for some power-ups, fighting your mother including her internal organs, and as you repeatedly die and restart for a completely new run-through, you'll keep asking: what exactly is going on here? The various endings you get in the game are hints to what life outside the basement is like for Isaac, but never give you a full answer; and while you're constantly grossed out by the horrific imagery shown on your screen, you'll always wonder why a small child is going all this hell?

Outlast

I choose outlast as my case-study's this is because the game has a lot of scary features in it. such as the setting. It's set really late at night and also the building the journalist/reporter is trying to get into a mansion. For the fact that in the first scene it is extremely hard for him to get in the front door therefore he has to climb through a window this knows that in the mansion its gonna be complicated. Another thing is that with the jump scares there a lot of them the reason why this is a major feature because it makes the game more scary and then people are not sure what to expect, the thing that makes the jump scares a lot more scary is that there is not too much build up to the scary bit, it just happens this makes it a lot more surprising. In outlast the game plays around with the lighting this gives a great effect and because the only item you get that you can use its a camera this means you can only use a camera when its dark because it has a torch on it or some type of light source. And the final thing that I wanted to mention is that the enemy's are big and scary they are not normal and look like there disfigured, because as a general thing when Humans don't know much about something they are scared this can change depending on how other people may react and how they think of it, for example people are scared of spiders why? Because they don't know to much about them or is it because it is the only insect they see a lot with 8 legs?

26/09/16

In this lesson I was doing concept ideas for what the library would look like for the first scene and the view this was just a small drawing to try and get a prospective of what it might look like. Although I think even though it is an idea in a library they wouldn't have such a colourful chair as this. As well as this it would have been nice to have added some carpet, or some sort of floor that is visible just to give it more of a better look because the table and chair are at the same angle but the book shelf is lightly different and since there is no colour to that section it is harder to tell what is what.

The next lesson we had David and he said that we was to stay in the college grounds and to find some sounds made by us and to try to make sure that they can be related to horror. So we got the sounds and uploaded it to the computer using a professional recorder provided by the college. Our group got sounds of us walking through grass, panting, stepping down steps and falling on leaves. When we was on the way back to the class I decided to do a deep voice and to speak in a deep voice and just say a few things such as "I've got you now".

27/09/16

On this day we was we had David and we mixed the sounds that we had found from the day before. We used these sounds to make a chase scene and we mixed the sounds to make it sound better. David said for us to get some sounds from the internet, so I decided that some good soundtracks to use would be the soundtrack from the film Nightmare on Elm Street and also decided to use the song you guessed it. The reason why I decided to use both of these is because the Nightmare on Elm Street has an eerie feeling towards it and within Adobe Audition I decided to make the song you guessed it a bit more quite so you can only hear the piano. These two mix very well because the piano adds very well to the eerie sound.

After this I thought it was good so I decided to get feedback. And people said that the music doesn't suit very well so I decided to change it to something better.

                                                                            28/09/16

On this day we started we started doing side portraits drawing people. I believe this is to help with the animation project because we are doing 2D animation this will help because most of the drawings will be done from a side view. As well as this also doing the front of the face proportions. Proportions in 2 ways how big to do features and where to place on the face.

In Vinny's lesson I decided to help Finnish off the concepts and so Joe had an idea of what to do for the library or a setup that can be used. I did a few so everyone would understand what it might look like so they can adjust their drawing to fit so there isn't 2 completely different types of art or one looks 3D and then that the rest is 2D.

  4 /10/16

On this day we had Marshall and we were set the task to draw a character from our group, since there was only 1 character our group was going to end up drawing the same character. This was so when we drew the character we would get them scanned into a computer and the printed out. When we started this we were told that we don’t need to add a lot of detail because it won’t be printed out. And I ended up drawing a character exactly as another team mate so Marshall told me to do another one because we couldn't have the exact same picture. Then Marshall said to try and do it in another position perhaps as a suggestion so I ended up drawing the character holding a stick because in one of the scenes she has a stick.

3/10/16

I took my time to make the forest the first time because I encounter a few problems such as where to put things how long ti has to be to make it pan out and how to make it pan out but continuously. This  was to me a problem because I didn't know how to do this so it meant that i'm going to have to find out some how and I looked at videos to see but not a lot were helpful except one from the YouTuber Draw with Jazza. Then when I found this out I decided to change the forest setting because it will be hard to make it work properly not also that but that means it wont work with the angle of the character because they will be 2 completely different angles.

6/10/16

We were also told to create a mister man character and they could be one we decide to make up or it could be one that we know like mister tickle or mister bump. I made one and called him mister curry. And we had to use tools to draw him, this was like a time to explore the program since some people hadn't used it before.
This was the first one and I found a picture on the and tried my best to copy it using the tools in illustrator. And for my first attempt this wasn't bad but could have been a lot better.

(17/10/16 )- (30/10/16)
no college then

1/11/16 - 3/11/16

We carried on working on our project making sure that we had done our tasks by this time I had all the backgrounds done and I was starting to help other people out to see how I can help them. So I helped the people out that was still animating. And put it together that and we quickly previewed it to see how it was therefore we had a slight overview of what it will look like before the class sees it because we had so little time to Finnish.
