Unit 3: Introduction to professional practice in media and production

9/11/16

Understanding creative media company's.

In this lesson we was learning the difference between horizontal and vertical integration and to know what that means in creative media. Also to understand the different type of companies involved in creative media production. After this Vinny asked if anyone knew what horizontal integration was and none knew. Vinny told us that there are 3 stages the designers and developers so the people that develop and design the product. Publishers so the people that publish the product and finally exhibitors or distributors these are the people who sell the product or present it in a demo to show people before hand. After this Vinny told us that when Movie developers and designers decided to buy more and more cinema's so they were able to then get less competition and to be more at top and then after that they decided to publish there own products. And since they had there own picture house (cinema) this means that they had all 3 of the horizontal so they was making lots of money from this. Eventually the high court told them that they couldn't because its unfair for other competitors.

After he showed is vertical integration he showed us horizontal and this is when a company has a synergy with other products or other services the company may provide. (The word synergy means to work together) synergy is when they work together for example Sony. They might advertise something like Sony pictures so TV's or monitors through Sony entertainment. This way they advertise themselves to make more money also they do this because they would profit more together than of they were separate company's.

Case study 1 - You Tuber

A media carer job as a YouTuber. The carer title of a YouTuber is in the creative media sector, from video making to video editing. From making YouTube videos it doesn’t require great knowledge unless the knowledge has to do with the video or the nature of your channel. This is very good because anyone can do it and some people may be better at other things such as vlogging or providing information that office work.

Advantages and disadvantages.

·         It will take a long time to get known in this industry since there are already big YouTubers. The advantage to this that in this time you can take time to see what makes you a better YouTuber and to see how you can improve also this will give you some time to get to know what your audience will want to see.
·
The don’t need a high budget to start this you just need something to record and it depends on what you are going to record for example, if you have a PS4 and you want to record the only thing that will cost is the game and the console because the PS4 has a built in recording system. And once you do get big if you did want better equipment you will be getting more than enough (If you are getting paid) and there will time to get the better equipment.
·
Once you get big you won’t decrease if you carry on making videos you will just grow and grow making it easier for you. When you get noticed you will be noticed by other YouTubers as well as a lot of viewers and they may ask to do a collaboration video meaning that you come together to make a video. This will help you out both and you will probably become friends with person.
·
You will get people that don’t like your videos and say hurtful things to you even though you have put a lot of time and effort into making the video for the purposes of the viewer.

Skills required

The skills required that are required for being a YouTuber and that is communication, audio, editing, marketing and attractiveness. All these things to edit is important although editing is the least important if you are just starting. These skills help and only you can learn from teaching yourself by seeing what looks better and what appeals.

Communication: How you talk to the viewers and what the dialogue is. So how you explain things and if it is clear or not this is an essential because if you are doing a tutorial but you are not saying anything majority of the people isn’t going to understand.

Audio: This is so that people can hear you and it is important since audio makes up half of the video therefore if the audio is missing then the chances of someone watching your video has been decreased. Also how loud some people don’t think if there audio is too low or too loud meaning that people have a hard time hearing or a deafening.

Editing: This step is to make sure that if you made a video and the volume is to low then you can make the correct adjustments. Or you can add sound effects or something funny to add humour and maybe subtitles this is so if something can’t be heard properly then you can add so people can understand.

Marketing and Attractiveness: This is how appealing your video is does it meet the requirements of the title if not then change to something that will apply. Also how well you edit the video although to edit a video is not essential but it can make a big difference. Attractiveness also applies to the channel page so it looks nice if it is more people will view it. Also Meta tags these are tags that get your video to appear when someone searches something if they typed something with the tag then it will appear on the search.

I think that the skills that I have are being able to edit and the rest of the skills that I have to improve on are communication, audio and marketing and attractiveness. The reason why is because when I do make a You Tube video, if you are talking there has to be talking to a constant, instead of talking and stopping. When it comes to communication as well as talking you have to make sure that it is clear and that is something that I would have to improve on is better equipment.

Case study 2 - games designer

A media carer job as a game designer. The title of being a games designer is to make games it is a creative job because you have to think how you can make something happen and then how the person who will be playing what they will do. They have to think about how they can pretray the story, chartacters and the game law so how the game works and how things happen or how people do things.

Advantages and disadvantages

The game takes a lot of work to make and there are multiple things that happen when working as a game designer such as working with animated graphics make a story for the game that is easy to follow and making game strategies so people know how to play almost like a guide on how to play the game.

To be a games designer is quite casual as in you don't need to wear any suits or smart uniform usually just casual so. This is because most of there time is spent in front of the computer making graphics, stories, characters and gaming strategies. Because the game designers work long hours the meet deadlines this can often lead to them feeling fatigued.

As well as making a game there are a few things that goes wrong that the game designers have to fix these are small bugs and glitches. The difference between a bug and a glitch is that a glitch is that something that is not meant to be achievable is or happen and a glitch in the code makes it possible. A bug is where there is an error something wrong with the code and something that is meant to be achievable is made unintentionally impossible.

For this job the skills that are required are to be able to have good English to give reports about a game just like a games tester. The reports have to include what bugs a game has what the point of the game is. The report is similar to a GDD (game design document). I don't think that personally that I would be able to great reports without other people checking them because my English not as developed as it should be. As well as designing a game I think that it would be hard to make or get the assets because I don't have a lot of experience. Although if it came to coding the game I would have some idea because I have experience from construct 2 and from visual studio C++. 1 Thing that I should improve on is my ability to be work under pressure, because then if I have to rush work or there is a sudden change for a deadline then I'll be able to handle it better than I can currently.

Whilst in the production while our group of 3 were making a game it was moderately hard because we was using Construct 2 as the game engine and there isn't any tutorials good tutorials how to make a Visual novel. Another thing that made it hard was that I had to wait for the assets to be done so because they took long and that means that I have to rush if the assets come late because that means the time too the deadline is shorter. I was thinking of using proxy's for the assets but because it is quite messy since there on 1 page. This would the advantage of getting started on time and a disadvantage is that if I do proxy assets that are not ready it could take time to change assets the picture need not also that but some of the code will have to be adjusted and changed and another disadvantage is that I would need time to bug test. But something that I realized from my experience of making a game is that you really need to have to alligate all of your time and making sure you know what you are doing because then it just becomes a waste of time.
